Papa Mambo Heats up the WAG’s Jazz on the Rooftop

The pool on WAG’s rooftop sculpture garden will be boiling on August 4 when Papa Mambo heats up the night at Jazz on the Rooftop. Doors open at 6pm, with the concert starting at 7:30. Tickets are $21 for WAG members and $25 for non-members, and allow free Gallery admission the day of the concert. There is also a cash bar and an optional barbeque by Storm Restaurant for $20. Tickets are available in person at the WAG or through their website at wag.ca.

For over two decades, Papa Mambo has been providing high caliber music and performances onstage, radio, tv and on their CDs to delighted audiences. Created by Chilean-born classical guitarist Rodrigo Muñoz in 1989, Winnipeg's Papa Mambo soon became recognized as one of the most skillful, exciting, and important innovators in Canada's Latin music scene. This freewheeling 11-piece band has always emphasized great playing and inspired arrangements. Their diverse array of jazz-inflected Latin rhythms and progressive musical ideas promises a performance full of hot solos, driving ensemble work, and tempo-shifting dance-floor madness.

As well as Muñoz on vocals and percussion, the band consists of Dave Lawton, trumpet; Ken Gold, saxophone; Gilles Fournier, bass; Will Bonness, keyboard; Jeff Presslaff, trombone; Hyalmar Gonzalez, Marcelo Hinojosa, and Amber Epp, vocals; Victor Lopez, guitar and percussion; and Scott Senior, percussion. Accomplished musicians in their own right, together they are an exuberant and exciting group to witness.

Mark your calendars now for our other Jazz on the Rooftop concerts:
August 18 • U of M Jazz Camp Faculty
August 25 • Red Moon Road
