WAG Celebrates Surrealism All Night Long at Nuit Blanche
Winnipeg, MB, September 23, 2014: Get ready for an evening of lights and Surrealism with Nuit Blanche at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. This FREE, all-night art party on Saturday, September 27 gets started at 7pm, and wraps up at 4am, Sunday, September 28.
The headline is the 8pm public opening of two exhibitions featuring works by Salvador Dalí: Dali Up Close, which includes paintings, watercolours, drawings, jewellery, and sculpture by the Surrealist master, as well as the celebrated photographs taken in collaboration with Philippe Halsman; and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, an uncompromising selection of paintings by Old Masters and members of the Group of Seven, including Dalí's masterpiece Santiago El Grande.
“Nuit Blanche Winnipeg brings an incredible vibe and energy to the city and the WAG. I look forward to it every year,” comments WAG Director & CEO Dr. Stephen Borys. “It’s wonderful to see the variety of people that attend and take in the various events. The WAG is excited to once again host such a fantastic line up this year, this time featuring major work by Salvador Dalí, for the first time in Winnipeg.”
Art-making activities will take place throughout the Gallery, from bracelet-making with the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library to Exquisite Corps, a game invented by the Surrealists that collectively assembles words or images.
With another nod to Dalí, Surrealist films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound, Un Chien Andalou, and Dalí’s own Destino will be screened. Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers will perform Random Acts of Dance, MEMETIC Roaring 2020s will bring electronic-swing, balkan beats, and world tribal dubs, while projecting visuals, and DJ Colin Shots will perform on the rooftop.
Nuit Blanche is part of Culture Days Manitoba and Nuit Blanche Winnipeg events.
