WAG Brings The Legend of Kiviuq to Life at Family Sunday

Winnipeg, Manitoba, January 23, 2015:  The Winnipeg Art Gallery invites the community to a wonderful afternoon of fun for Family Sunday: The Legend of Kiviuq on February 8. Running from 1 to 4pm, Family Sunday is an opportunity to spend quality time with the children or grandchildren with a host of activities inspired by art. This edition of Family Sunday is themed to The Legend of Kiviuq.

Kiviuq is a popular Inuit hero whose many adventures are known across the Arctic. While out in his kayak, young Kiviuq is blown off course by a storm. Finding himself in a strange land, he sets out to find his family, meeting the “Bee-woman” and the “Father of fish” on his journey.

“Family Sunday is an entertaining afternoon with activities for all ages,” comments Rachel Baerg, WAG Head of Education. “The Legend of Kiviuq adds a whole new layer of story, imagination, and learning for children and adults. It will be a great event!”

Family Sunday: The Legend of Kiviuq features snow games in the Rooftop Sculpture Garden. Hands-on activities are planned indoors, including a puppet making workshop inspired by the Manitoba Puppet Theatre’s production of The Legend of Kiviuq, also taking place at the event. Jaco Ishulutaq, a carver from Pangnirtung, Nunavut, will be completing a Kiviuq carving on the ramp. The artist’s work is also being featured in an exhibition and sale presented by the Gallery Shop.

MPT’s The Legend of Kiviuq has received rave reviews throughout Canada and around the world, and returns after a 25-year hiatus with a special run at the WAG. The production is complemented by an exhibition of the puppets – when they're not in use – as well as drawings, prints, and sculpture of Kiviuq by celebrated Inuit artist Jessie Oonark, and her large family of artists.

Family Sunday (1-4pm) admission is $10 per family (up to two adults and four children under 18 – does not include entry to Dalí Up Close and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery). The Legend of Kiviuq puppet show takes place at 1pm and 3pm. Rush seating. Space is limited.

A special Family Sunday price for viewing the Dalí Up Close and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery exhibitions is $18 for February 8 only.

To ensure viewing of The Legend of Kiviuq puppet show, $8 tickets are available for shows running February 6, 13 (7pm); February 14, 15 (1pm and 3pm) at wag.ca or at the WAG front desk.

The WAG is grateful to the Manitoba Inuit Association (MIA) for its support of Family Sunday.
