WAG Offers Brick Building Workshops and Building Contest Inspired by Olympus

Winnipeg, Manitoba, July 16, 2015: LEGO®, LEGO and more LEGO at the Winnipeg Art Gallery! Back by popular demand, the WAG is hosting brick building workshops inspired by the LEGO viewports found in this summer’s blockbuster exhibition, Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin. LEGO enthusiasts are also invited to enter the Olympus Building Contest for a chance to have their masterpiece displayed at the WAG.

Brick building workshops run Sunday, July 19 and Sunday, August 16 from 1 to 3pm. These afternoons will be filled with freestyle building. Entrance is free with admission.

“LEGO is so much fun for people of all ages and these brick building workshops give families an opportunity to have fun together in a creative environment,” comments Rachel Baerg, WAG Head of Education. “Manitobans are loving the LEGO viewports in Olympus, nearly 800 visitors came out for their unveiling last month.”

Olympus is a striking showcase of statuary, ceramics, and artifacts dating from the seventh century BC to the second century AD. The exhibition brings visitors face to face with ancient treasures from one of the most important collections in the world, rarely seen in North America. As Manitoba’s first major display of classical antiquities in over half a century, Olympus is this summer’s must-see. Visitors are calling it “epic,” “phenomenal,” and “amazing.”

The exhibition now features viewports with incredible replicas of an ancient Greek theatre, a chariot race, a Roman villa, and the Parthenon, all built by the Manitoba LEGO Users Group.

The WAG is calling all Master Builders and Master Builders-in-training to enter the Olympus Building Contest for a chance to have their creation displayed in the galleries! The public is invited to submit their Olympus-inspired masterpiece before September 8, 2015 in one of three age categories: under 12, 13 to 17, or 18 and over. LEGO creations built during the brick building workshops are not a take home activity.
