WAG Director Stephen Borys Receives Leadership Award from Downtown Winnipeg BIZ
Winnipeg, Manitoba, November 25, 2015: Yesterday, Winnipeg Art Gallery Director & CEO Dr. Stephen Borys was awarded the Leadership in the Arts Award from the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
Every year the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ recognizes individuals and organizations that have contributed to the vitality of the city’s downtown at its annual general meeting with the Achievement Awards.
“It is an honour to receive the Leadership in the Arts award from the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ,” states Dr. Borys. “Winnipeg is an exciting place to be, and I am proud to lead the Winnipeg Art Gallery as part of our thriving downtown community. Through successful collaborations with the Downtown BIZ, the University of Winnipeg, and other partners, we are constantly attracting thousands of people to the heart of the city.”
Dr. Borys is one of several award winners who were celebrated for improving not only their own organization, but the larger downtown. From spearheading the WAG’s most successful exhibitions, such as 100 Masters: Only in Canada, Dalí Up Close, and Olympus, to Nuit Blanche and other major events, Dr. Borys’ efforts are having a positive effect on Winnipeg’s downtown, which will be compounded by the WAG’s Inuit Art Centre, a game-changing initiative that will change the face of downtown Winnipeg over the next few years.
"We are pleased to honour Dr. Stephen Borys of the WAG, for his creativity and ingenuity in making the WAG relevant to all Winnipeggers, not only through the diverse exhibitions brought to Downtown Winnipeg, but also through exciting events that are transforming the WAG into one of the many downtown places to simply hang out,” stated Stefano Grande, Executive Director, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
In addition to serving as Director & CEO of the WAG, Dr. Borys is an adjunct professor at his alma mater, the University of Winnipeg, where he received his B.A. Honours degree. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he holds an Executive MBA, a PhD in Art History from McGill University, and an MA in art and architectural history from the University of Toronto. Dr. Borys is a graduate of the Getty’s Museum Leadership Institute and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. He is a member of the Board or Trustees of the Association of Art Museum Directors, past president and board member of the Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization, and past board director of the Canadian Museums Association.
