WAG@ThePark Displays Work by Young Artists in Annual Exhibition

Winnipeg, Manitoba, March 9, 2017: The Winnipeg Art Gallery is once again mounting its annual exhibition of work by young artists enrolled in WAG Studio programs. Through the Eyes of a Child opens March 25 at WAG@ThePark located in the Assiniboine Park Pavilion, and runs until May 28. Ranging from age 5 to 14, the artists come from all across the city.

In conjunction with the exhibit, a special free open house celebrating WAG Studio’s new space inside the WAG will be held Saturday, April 1, 1-4pm. Art classes are now taking place on the Gallery’s lower level, accessed off Colony Street, the original home to WAG Studio over 45 years ago. Visitors can mingle and take part in free art-making activities in the vibrant space, which has been renovated to house art classes until the new Inuit Art Centre opens in 2019-20.

“A child’s creativity knows no bounds. Using their hands, minds, and imaginations, it is incredible to see what they produce,” says Diane Lafournaise, Manager of WAG Studio. “For many of the young artists, this is the first time their work has ever been presented in a gallery space, adding even more to the excitement.”

Every fall, winter, and spring, hundreds of children and teens enjoy the challenge and delight of creating art through WAG Studio programs. This year’s Through the Eyes of a Child exhibit features group projects from public and sponsored winter classes. Several hundred talented youth are represented through block printing and clay work.

The Through the Eyes of a Child exhibit is presented at WAG@ThePark in Assiniboine Park Pavilion, 55 Pavilion Crescent. The galleries are open daily from 9am to 4pm (5pm starting Easter weekend). Admission is free.

Registration is now open for child and adult summer art classes and summer art camps for kids. This year’s art camps are inspired by Cubist master Picasso, Canada 150 celebrations, and sights and sounds of the city. Campers will see and learn about the art, create masterpieces with professional artists, go on exciting field trips, and stage their own mini-exhibition at the end of the week.
