Ron Paley and Ian McDougall in WAG’s Jazz under the Rooftop

The final concert of the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Jazz under the Rooftop winter series brings together two great legends of jazz. Ron Paley and Ian McDougall join together for a stellar evening in the WAG’s Muriel Richardson Auditorium at 8pm on Saturday, January 16.

A perennial Jazz on/under the Rooftop favourite, Ron Paley has been a major force in the Winnipeg music scene since forming the Ron Paley Big Band in 1976. He has recorded two big band albums, one trio album, and is completing work on a new CD. His commissioned works include a piece for choir and organ based on the text of Psalm 122 for the Royal Canadian College of Organists and a work for choir and piano based on three of Shakespeare’s sonnets for the Winnipeg Singers. In 2004 the band performed and toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, playing jazz arrangements of songs by Rogers and Hart for A Cinderella Story.

As lead trombone and soloist for twenty years with Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass, Ian McDougall was a key contributor to the group’s Juno and Grammy wins. He was also a founding member, soloist, lead trombone, and arranger for the Juno award-winning Brass Connection. His compositions and arrangements, in both jazz and classical idioms, are performed internationally. As both a soloist and with his groups, he has performed all over the world. Earlier this year he released his first album of original big band compositions.

“Ron Paley has been one of the most popular performers in our Jazz on the Rooftop series and Jazz under the Rooftop series for many years,” says Brian Wolfe, Rental and Programs Co-ordinator. “Bringing him together with Ian McDougall, one of Canada’s greatest jazz musicians, guarantees an amazing evening. I strongly suggest getting your tickets early, because this is definitely a sell-out concert.”
Tickets: WAG member $20 • Senior $21 • Student $21 • Adult $22 • Available in person at the WAG or through Ticketmaster. Includes Gallery admission the day of the concert. Media sponsor: 102.3 Clear FM.
