WAG Presents Picasso-Themed Family Day on July 16

Winnipeg, Manitoba, July 11, 2017: The Winnipeg Art Gallery invites the community for an afternoon of family fun inspired by Picasso on Sunday, July 16. From 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Family Fusion: Pablo’s Picnic features interactive tours of the Picasso exhibitions, artmaking on the rooftop, and light snacks.

The event is part of the WAG’s monthly Family Fusion DIY series, providing opportunities to spend creative time together through hands-on arts and crafts workshops. Admission is just $30 per family (up to two adults and four children under 18) or $20 per family for WAG members, and covers entry to the permanent collection galleries. As an added treat, this month also includes admission to two Picasso exhibitions: Picasso in Canada and the National Gallery of Canada’s Man and Beast. The Vollard Suite of Prints.

“Family Fusion: Pablo’s Picnic is an amazing chance for families to have fun while learning about one of the greatest artists of all time!” says Rachel Baerg, WAG Head of Education. “As the genius behind such innovations as Cubism and collage, Picasso used to say that all children are artists. We will be celebrating his many artistic sides through various activities guaranteed to spark the imagination.”

Thirty-minute tours designed especially for families run at 1:30pm and 2:30pm and include games like eye spy and plasticine sculpture. Visitors can experiment with different media just like Picasso did with Cubist watercolour painting, mask-making, and string line art workshops on the rooftop.

More about the Picasso exhibitions at the WAG: Picasso in Canada brings together Picasso’s best work from collections across the country. Thirty-five pieces were selected from eight Canadian art museums, as well as some private collections, from paintings and watercolours to drawings, engravings, and ceramic works. Man and Beast features 100 etchings and drypoints, widely considered Picasso’s graphic masterpiece.

Watch for our next Family Fusion day on Sunday, August 27. The Scavenger Hunt event will see families uncovering hidden secrets embedded in the art and architecture of the WAG.
