WAG Screening of A Kingdom Reborn Highlights City of Lviv
A Kingdom Reborn: Treasures from Ukrainian Galicia, a stunning film that brings to life the remarkable cultural heritage of the Ukrainian city of Lviv, will be screened in the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Muriel Richardson Auditorium from 2 to 4pm, Sunday, February 7. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students (available at the door).
Over the centuries Lviv has borne many names—Leopoli, Lemberg, Lwow, Lvov—and is now known as the “City of the Lion,” a name bestowed in honour of a medieval ruler, Prince Lev, or “the Lion.” As the capital of the medieval principality of Galicia, it is a cultural crossroad whose architectural monuments and artistic treasures are a stunning blend of the Byzantine and Latin aesthetics.
Filmmaker Dani Stodilka will be in attendance at this special screening which is filmed in English and some Ukrainian. The screening will be followed by a Q&A period and discussion moderated by Dr. Myroslav Shkandrij, Professor of Slavic Studies in the Department of German and Slavic Studies, University of Manitoba.

“Never has our tragic history been so well presented…I think that once the film has been screened abroad, tourists will simply flock to Lviv.” – Ihor Kalynets, Writer (Lviv, Ukraine)
“The film […] is effective in presenting, through the medium of film and musical accompaniment, the significant role of Galicia and particularly Liviv in the history and culture of Ukraine.” – Prof. Yaroslav Isaievych, Director of the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies, National Academy of Sciences, Ukraine
Presented in partnership with the Manitoba Provincial Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Department of German and Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba, and 1253 Productions.
