New Art City Mural Graces the WAG Wall

In a city famous for its murals, The World’s Best Mural will be unveiled at 5:30pm on Thursday, October 14 on the west wall of the Winnipeg Art Gallery Studio Building. The project is a collaboration between the WAG and Art City, West Broadway’s drop-in art-making centre. The unveiling will be followed by a reception with the young artists in the Studio Building at 280 Memorial Boulevard, right next door to the WAG.

The 8 x 16 foot mural was created by young artists from West Broadway in consultation with artist Wanda Koop and the Art City staff and is related to the current WAG exhibiton Wanda Koop…On the Edge of Experience. An internationally recognized artist, Wanda Koop got her start taking Saturday morning art classes at the WAG, and is the founder of Art City. Koop, the WAG, and Art City all felt that a collaborative project linking the exhibition, Art City, and the WAG would be a wonderful way to celebrate the creative spirit of Winnipeg’s inner city.

“Projects like this that link young people and the community with the WAG are so important to us,” says WAG Director Stephen Borys. “We extend sincere thanks to the Graham C. Lount Foundation for generously providing a grant to the WAG to make this collaboration possible.”

“Education programs at the WAG work hard to engage local children and teens in projects that animate the building and bring forward the ideas of the young creators,” says WAG Art Educator Michael Boss. “These projects provide young people with a sense of ownership of the Gallery and bring their youthful creativity to bear in a way that benefits everyone.”
