Old Houses at the Assiniboine, St. James, Manitoba
Work depicts a moist atmospheric day in Spring with the twigs of trees playing across the picture plane. Houses can be seen as viewed from the bottom of small hilly mounds. The trees do not yet have leaves, and the grass is still brown in colour. The work is primarily painted on the lower third of the paper; the tree branches being the only element that extends into the upper portion of the pictorial surface.

The focal point of the work is a large insect within a brown circular form banded by strips of black and red. The outer aspect of the insect's body is encrusted with small fragments (similar to crushed eggshell) which have been painted green, giving a textured surface. At the centre of the insect's body there are 3 smaller insects within a yellow circle. Surrounding the large insect, within the circular form, are 8 smaller insects with orange bodies. The background of the painting is red and black; painted in a sweeping curvilinear form.

The work consists of three parts: (a) a nude painting of Janice Gurney produced by Andy Patton; (b) a photostat of a photograph of Indian famine victims by W.W. Rolling Home to Moses
Central image is that of a man seating on a bicycle-like apparatus. The seat and rear wheel is that of a bicycle, but a cart-like object with wheels underneath, has replaced the handle-bars and regular front wheel. Behind and left of the man seated on the bicycle is a deer and behind the deer, landscape squared off in a window. Just to the right of the deer, is what appears to be a religious figure. Just above the cart- like object are several figures - a man dressed in black with a broom- like object over his shoulder; another male figure and a child sitting in a wagon-like vehicle. Underneath the cart is a man in a horizontal position holding flowers in his left hand.

Premises for Self Rule: Treaty No. 1
Work consists of three components: photo emulsion on canvas, acrylic on canvas painting and laser-cut, black vinyl lettering on Plexiglas. The photo on canvas depicts ten North American Indian men dressed in ceremonial dress at the signing of Treaty No. 1 on August 3, 1971. The painting is dark green with the occasional, randomly placed, vertical black line. The green has been applied in wide strokes and been allowed to drip. The vinyl lettering on plexiglas relates the narrative with regard to the signing of the treaty.

Tour
Work consists of two panels, one vertical and one horizontal. The larger vertical panel is painted in a mustard shade. The smaller horizontal panel has images of the Pontiac ‘Silver Streak' cars from 1935 to 1942, together with an advertising narrative. Along the top edge of the panel , several Indian men with bows and arrows are depicted. At the top right of the horizontal panel is printed the work 'TOUR'. The left edge of the horizontal panel fits against the top right edge of the vertical.
Diagonal Conjunction

The Pagan

A “pagan” figure is the central image. On what appears to be a man’s head, is the skull of a cow. The figure’s face is painted and it has a very large right eye. The bones of the rib cage, pelvic area and feet are all visible. The hands have numerous silver rings on them together with numerous silver bracelets on the arms. In front of the figure, is a baby in a papoose on a blanket.

Old City Hall
Winnipeg winter scene showing the street life along Main Street near the Old City Hall in the first decades of the 20th century. Along the street are a series of colourful storefronts. The street is populated with a variety of people. Children are playing and skating and horsedrawn carriages and sleighs make their way down the street. There is also a teepee together with the front half of a horse and a very sketchy dog sled depicted.
Peace Everlasting
Fishing boat with two figures in a bay with two, small, beached sailboats on shore. On one of the sailboats, is a prone figure holding a long, golden-haired little girl. On the second sailbot is a male figure bound to the broken mast, laying on the desk with his face to the sun.

Jungle

In the foreground is a cluster of coloured vegetation, a berried shrub, a weathered tree trunk and pile of logs. In the middleground, a waterfall among large boulders and cliff rocks. To the right, eroded land which has exposed tree roots entwined about one another.

To Each is Given
The painting, from the inclusion of various foreground objects, contains religious symbolism. The landscape scene is generic, a broad plain of green in the foreground, leadint to rolling, purplish/reddish hills in the distance, and an open sky with clouds in the background. A river runs through the hills and along the right side of the composition. Four objects are placed in a horizontal line along the front of the picture plane: a straw basket with assorted tools (pliers, axe, arrows, etc.) piled inside and outside of it, an open Holy Bible, a pile of white cloth, and two black boxes. The iconography of these items pertains to the Daily Tasks. Written above, in the clouds, is the phrase “To each is given”.
Oh Where Oh Where Shall Wisdom Be Found
Interior of a church which is lined with pews and contain a high altar behind which is a large sheet of stained glass. A monk stands mid-nave facing the altar. Above the altar, is a semi-dome decorated with a painting of the Crucifixion in which a crowd of onlookers observe the three drooping bodies upon the crosses. Around the periphery of the work are five vignettes which fade into the gray background and aren’t immediately visible. The scenes are as follows: close finish at a horserace; woman (or girl) holding a baby (or doll) upon her lap; man and woman toiling in the fields; two boxers; standing male figure, dressed in scholar’s robes, reading from a book. A gold trompe de l’oeil plaque at the centre bottom provides the title of the work.

Scene in the Scottish Highlands with sheep grazing in the foreground and a hill rising up against the open sky. In a green bluff are two ewes, each with a lamb.

Bird’s eye view of the Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan, looking down on a bend in the road. To the left is a steep rise of rock around which the road bends; to the right is a white flowering bush lining the side of the road. The composition is divided vertically into two areas, the left occupying about 2/3 of the paper and the right the remaining 1/3. On a table is a vase with flowers. In the foreground are two pedestals, one with a vase and other with a jug. Occupying the right portion of the composition, is a large birdcage containing a brown bird perched on a tree branch.

Painting is divided into two vertically with a copy of an Impressionist painting at the top and bottom. The top image is of a group of people arranged in a vertical line along a beach, copied from a Boudin painting (such as “Beach at Trouville” painted in 1865 as well as 1881). The well-dressed people are shaded by parasols and wide-rimmed hats. The lower image is a study of Monet’s “La grenouillere”.

A third bird, black and blue, is found rotated 180 degrees along a central axis, so that it appears upside down with its wing extended to the lower edge.

A figure, possibly female, is seated beside a table next to a window. One hand is draped over the arm of a red chair and the other hand cups the side of its face. The table is covered with various fruits and has a vase with daffodils on it. What appears to be a straw hat with a ribbon is tossed behind the vase. The figure’s form is reflected in the green pane of glass to the left of the table.
The Frog and the Rabbit
In the upper center of the painting is the top half of a blue moose, harbouring in its stomach a red rabbit cocooned in an oval form. Below the moose, in the lower half of the painting, is an undulating surface of red and orange that covers a black void. In the middle is a large crevice or opening, into which a frog has escaped.

The painting depicts 5 men: 2 large and 3 small. One of the larger men crouches in the lower left corner with his arms outspread. The second of these men, drawn with a bird’s head and wearing the same short skirt of red overlapping leaves as the first man, floats with his arms widespread towards the moon (sun?) in the upper left corner of the composition. Both men’s bodies are shown as if X-rayed. the three smaller men are merely schematically drawn and float throughout the upper composition. Below the larger man (center) is half of a conifer tree painted turquoise, a colour Beardy reserved for a link between the spirit and actual worlds. The painting is predominantly of earth tones, which agrees with Beardy’s assertion that all beings come from Mother Earth and should be coloured to reflect that principle.

The centrally composed image shows an oval form, possibly a turtle’s shell, with 10 bird-like legs escaping from its edges. In the central part of the oval are round egg-like forms. The image is of warm earth tones, a brown and red oval placed on a yellow ground.

One man appears to be a gymnast or dancer of some kind and he is captured at the height of his leap into the air. Some of the figures are barefooted or barechested.
Auction Sale
Loosely painted impressionistic work depicts a rural auction occurring outdoors on a farm. The era is the Depression, and a crowd of people, a sea of blue clothes, stand before a yellow clapboard house while household items are sold by the auctioneer who stands and gestures in the center of the composition. A 1930-40s pickup truck occupies the bottom, right corner of the composition; a person stands on the running board to participate in the auction while others crowd behind it.

Horizon

Two figures appear in a vertical line midway in the composition. The top figure is smaller, giving the impression that the lower figure is closer to the viewer. Both figures are nude and seem to be walking towards the viewer; the lower figure is female whereas the sex of the upper figure is not clarified. The upper figure bisects the two colour planes. neither of the figures has any identifying facial or body features and consist merely of an outline.
Ladies
Two, white female figures are set against a plain black colour field. The blank-faced women wear evening gowns. The figures occupy approximately 1/3 of the canvas and are situated on the same horizontal plane.

Sandy Bay

Building
Painting depicts the demolition of the Child’s Building at Portage & Main, Winnipeg, Manitoba. There are construction workers on the site, as well as numerous trucks. Next to what is left of the Child’s Building, is the construction of a new building.

Together they wove men's lives.

Tawny (York Mills)
Study of a forested hillside. The forest floor is tipped up at a severe angle to compress the sense of depth, emphasizing the two-dimension quality of the painting's surface. The mix of earth, fallen leaves, and snow is created with large, swirling brushstrokes. A tree trunk has been placed right in the middle of the composition, extending from top to bottom. The solid strip of brown separates the composition into two equal-sized rectangles and further emphasizes the flat and abstract qualities of the painting.

The Second Eve (Annunciation)
Mary and the Angel Gabriel represented naked as they are the Immaculate Conception. Mary is asleep on a bed. The Angel Gabriel holds a white lily which is the traditional symbol of ever lasting life and a stand in for Mary. The Angel Gabriel is androgynous and the eyes in his wings see everything and everyone. His pointing finger references Michelangelo's creation of Adam - the Gift of Life. The unrealistic colour depicts a separate dimension existing simultaneously in the same space. The Diet Pepsi can on the headboard is the ubiquitous nature of a teenager. Pepsi is of course the drink of the new generation. The time, 11:59pm as it appears on the clock on the headboard is significant because it is the end of one day and the beginning of another.

Deep Purple
The two panels are dominated by gradually darkening, loosely applied swaths of colour, from bright light pink through aquamarine blue to deep purple. Bright turquoise peeking through here and there provides attractive contrast. Images suggestive of Chinese calligraphy are drawn with the brush in flowing black lines reminiscent of cloissoné effect.
Hymenal View of Lunacy
Swaths of fabric in saturated hues which are bundled, knotted and interlaced in shapes that suggest the body's hidden interiors. The swaths suggest a visceral mass of organ-like shapes, deep reds and purples become enmeshed like a network of veins and arteries.

St. Catherine on the Wheel
The painting shows the scene in which, after converting the empress, Saint Catherine is subjected to torture on wheels spiked with iron blades which were to tear into her body. The wheels were miraculously broken, however, by a thunderbolt which blinded the torturers charged with turning them. The nearly nude saint is kneeling in prayer and looks unperturbed. Around her neck she is wearing a necklace decorated with a piece of coral. In front of a brocade, the wife of the emperor and probably an attendant watch the miracle.

Work is a combination of low relief, sculpture and painting, which depicts a marine scene. A sculpted tall ship navigates through a strait. throughout the composition, are numerous islands modelled in low relief in gesso. Three white buildings, two in relief, populate the islands. Two couples, too large for the scale of the buildings and islands, appear to be searching for something or someone. There is a woman stranded on a small island directly behind the tall ship. Waves are crashing against the shoreline of this island and she is in an agitated state. A small boat with six occupants can just be discerned in the water coming to her resuce. The background is flat, without relief, and shows a blue sky, brown mountains and a green tree line.

Annunciation
Two figures: to the left in red is the Angel Gabriel and to the right in blue is the Virgin Mary. Gabriel looks directly at Mary and gestures with his hands. Mary’s gaze is averted, downcast. In the style of Byzantine icons, the gowns and drapery are painted in a stylized manner, whereas the faces are much more detailed. The halos are in gold leaf in relief. The background is painted gold with applied mesh over top. The background is sparse with Cyrillic writing and a depiction of a Byzantine basilica. The imagery carries onto the well of the frame, with a host of blue-draped angels in various positions witnessing the event. The outer component of the commercial frame remains plain.
Crucifixion (Naïve)
The icon is a replica of a Carpathian icon from the Presov region, Ukraine. Influenced by Carpathian idols, the central composition of Christ on the cross with three women to his right and three men to his left, presumably these include the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdelene and St. John the Baptist. In the background rises a simplified city scene with churches prominent. Two angels in roundels continue the symmetrical composition at the top of the panel. The work is supported on panel and all non-painted areas of the work are sheathed in copper inlay, built up of small rectangular and square pieces of the metal fused together. The frame is hand-fashioned, simply constructed, the outer component painted.

Ritual of the Sausage
An elaborate pseudo-religious/social feast is taking place set in a windowless environment. A macabre celebration or wake, this grotesque fantasy is overwhelmed with the symbolic complexity of the carnal, precarious nature of humankind. The cycle of life and the realization that all living things consume other living things is presented. Death is forefront, holding a knife. Strings of sausages become fetish objects. They are food, rope, halo, faeces, clothing, phallus, ritual instruments and playthings. The dissonant ritual group, nun, crook, prisoner and butcher with knife and pail perform. The sausage trio turns round and round with a black bird. The female prisoner with shaved head is bound and blindfolded, representing another victim. The four handmaidens attend and service the reclining female figure. The older woman kneeing praying on her beads is straddled on the head by a white bird squawking at its black companion across the room. The two birds frame all the variations of light and dark that existing in the human pysche.

Hunger Strike in Ottawa for Valentyn Moroz
Students in front of the Soviet Embassy, Ottawa, protesting the arrest and incarceration of Ukrainian historian Valentyn Moroz in Vladimir Prison, Vladimir, Russia. In the foreground, members of the general public shuffle by a semi-circle of protesters, who show their dedication to their cause through their placards and by refusing the plates of food offered to them by figures outside the picture plane. In the background, the Soviet embassy is depicted as a white block with trompe l’oeil trees painted on at least one side, suggesting Kurelek’s lack of trust for the Soviet diplomats. Arising from, and contained within, the white block embassy is an iron cage containing, it is presumed, Valentyn Moroz. The image on the side of the cage depicts the scales of justice weighing on the side of Soviet Communism (the hammer and sickle) rather than itself (a smaller version of the scales of justice).

Superstition: Man's Instinct to Believe and Worship is Irrepressible
Against a painted background of ancient runes and modern symbols, the artist has illustrated cuttings from magazines and newspapers documenting what he understood as “false idols” of 1960s society: political ideology, extraterrestrial life, mind-altering drugs, astrology, spiritualism and pornography. Formally, this work is structured through two contrasting grid-like arrangements: through the loose haphazard placement of ephemera over top the tight isomorphic blocks, each containing a different rune or symbol.

Born Again
In the upper right corner of the painting, there is a reference to the work by master Ukrainian painter Ilya Repin (1844-1930) of the Zaporozhian Cossacks of Ukraine who are writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan (circa 1878-91). Directly underneath is a pair of woman’s legs splayed open for the birthing of watermelons. Below that a housewife with her eyes removed presents her perfectly cooked turkey. The artist inserts her own image into the work, located approximately half way down on the right side. She stares out at the viewer with a worried expression while clutching a Kozak-Mamai doll with a moustache.
