Venus and Mars

Wooden case with three shelves. The title refers to the Roman god and goddess but also to their namesakes, earth’s two planetary neighbours. The cast of the hand of Venus on the top shelf holds a sphere that is larger and in correct proportion to that held by the male hand of Mars on the shelf below. The spheres are faintly tinted as they appear in the night sky with that of Mars being pinkish and that of Venus a pale blue. The bottom shelf contains white plaster books.

The Story of Nuliajuk

On one side of the sculpture, a mother tells a story to a child in her amautik hood. The opposite side shows the sea spirit, Nuliajuk, with the two sea creatures she controls: a char and an octopus. The small face is that of a shaman who must visit Nuliajuk at the bottom of the sea and persuade her to release animals to hunters.
