Noon and Skirt reflects a range of influences—from Dada to Pop Art to modern abstract painting—that the Toronto artist Michael Snow was drawn to when he began producing the Walking Woman series in the early 1960s. In this familiar body of work, a striding female figure in profile, often with hands and feet cut off, is used as an arbitrary constant from which the artist investigates formal issues related to perception and painting. Snow produced hundreds of versions of the silhouette, as paintings, sculptures, wallpaper, and in film. At the same time, the figure’s serialized typicality provokes questions about the confines of a certain type of feminine identity in the post-World War II era.
