Lynn Chadwick began his artistic career in the 1930s as a draftsperson working in different architectural studios in London. He enlisted as a pilot during World War II and, following the war, branched out into interior and architectural design, including doing work with textiles and furniture. In the 1950s he began to experiment with sculptural medium, particularly in metal, and went on to produce a series of mobiles that are reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s work. The WAG bronze comes from the following decade when Chadwick had shifted to Minimalism and was concentrating on geometrical forms cast in bronze and sometimes given different patinas. He would later return to more organic modelling and figural themes, but during this brief period in the 1960s Chadwick remained focused on simple shapes, including the pyramidal form, which is evident in this bronze.
