Kananginak Pootoogook has been involved with drawing and printmaking since the late 1950s, when the graphic arts program first began at Cape Dorset. One of his prints was included in the first catalogued collection of Cape Dorset prints in 1959. Since that time he has created over 1,500 drawings, 300 of which have been rendered into prints for almost every annual collection. In 1978 four of Kananginak’s images were included in a limited-edition portfolio released by the World Wildlife Commission. He has always represented Arctic wildlife in his work, especially the numerous species of Arctic birds. He has also often depicted caribou, as seen in this particularly graceful work from the WAG’s collection.
