In 1979 Eric Cameron began his Thick Paintings series. He painted significant objects with layer upon layer of white gesso over the course of many years, transforming them into sculptural pieces. In this work there are 2,798 half coats of gesso applied to the surface of the object. With 'IcquV Cameron set out to integrate his Thick Paintings into the age-old tradition of religious art. 'IcquV is the ancient Greek word for fish, which in Christianity is both an early symbol and acronym for Jesus Christ God’s Son Saviour. Instead the “painting” took on its own character, changing with the process of drying and wetting due to repeated applications. The end result is a highly complex comment on the philosophical, aesthetic, and practical character of the act of painting.
