Kenneth Lochhead was associated with a group of painters, known as the Regina Five, who brought international attention to Saskatchewan in the 1960s. Sky Location exemplifies what is called colour field painting, or post-painterly abstraction, which was championed especially by the influential American art critic Clement Greenberg. Consisting of raw, unsized, canvas stained in divisions of saturated colour, the monumental painting draws attention to the picture plane itself rather than forms within it. The visual effect is a poetic materialism, in which the physical conditions of painting itself are made elegantly clear. This painting was gifted to the WAG by Gustavo da Roza, the architect responsible for designing the WAG building in 1969, and his wife Gloria.
