Celebrated for his portraits, still lifes, and especially his luxurious flower pieces, Henri Fantin-Latour was associated with some of the leading French painters of the day including Edouard Manet and the artists known as the Impressionists. He was also inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch still-life painting, which can be seen in his compositions featuring splendid arrangements of freshly cut flowers, deftly painted with meticulous colouring and brushwork, and sensitivity to the actual species. In 1863 the French critic Zachary Astruc praised Fantin-Latour’s flower paintings as “marvels of colour and artistic sensibility … as compelling as they are charming.” Surprisingly, while Fantin-Latour worked and exhibited in Paris for most of his life, the primary market for his floral paintings was in Great Britain not France.
