Inspired by the aesthetic of documentary street photography, where artists focus on areas or people often overlooked by mainstream society, Gabor Szilasi turned to the Quebec countryside and its landscapes, architecture, and residents as a rich resource for his subject matter. One such example from this period is the interior of the home of Louis-Philippe Yergeau, from Abitibi, Quebec. Szilasi photographed the rooms of the Yergeau residence on more than one occasion, documenting the overabundance of Christmas decorations and other paraphernalia that dominated this private space. In 1980 Szilasi was quoted as saying, “Traces of man interest me very much, whether it’s architecture or interiors or just a street or sign.”
