Taking inspiration from nature and its inhabitants, yet considering the potential for mutability and change, Ione Thorkelsson’s forms are poetic investigations into the science of evolution. Through the juxtaposition of unrelated elements, and the amalgamation of various animal and tree limbs, along with other organic structures, Thorkelsson’s creations strikingly animate the space they inhabit. By combining recognizable elements not normally associated with one another, she creates pieces that capture the viewer’s attention, and that have earned her a national reputation for innovation in cast glass. Working in relative isolation in Manitoba, Thorkelsson is largely self-taught, relying on her tenacious inventiveness and immense respect for the medium to guide her.
