Adult Beginner
Adults provide their own tools and supplies for classes unless otherwise indicated. Basic drawing and painting materials and equipment are provided for the first class, at which time the instructor hands out and discusses supply lists. Advanced Studio students should bring their own selection of supplies to the first class. For unique workshops, pottery, and sculpture, supplies are generally included in the class cost. Students must provide their own tools for clay classes and their own SLR camera (film or digital), film, and print processing.
Drawing and Watercolour
This two-hour class is a great introduction to a few, basic drawing techniques and to watercolour as a supporting medium. For people who would like to try these two media before committing to a full-length course in either one.

Photography 1
A terrific introductory course designed for anyone who wants to take better photographs. Learn the ins and outs of your camera and the dos and don’ts of basic composition. Discover the magic of the darkroom and the wonders of digital imaging. Through eight weeks of informative and entertaining lessons, you will go from hoping one or two shots turn out, to having consistently great photographs. Natural Forms

In conjunction with the Ashdown Collection of English Porcelain exhibition, Dianne Gregson will introduce techniques for creating clay vessels inspired by natural forms and motifs. After an introduction to some of the options available in the studio, you will tour the exhibition to discuss techniques involved in creating some of the work on display. You will then return to the studio to try various processes and work on your own pottery designs. Combinations of handbuilding, throwing, basic press molding and other decorative techniques will be presented. Most materials are covered in the cost. A list of supplemental supplies will be mailed.

50 lbs. of Clay:Large Clay Sculpture Building Techniques
Each participant in this workshop will build a large sculptural piece using 50 lbs of solid clay. Instructor Xanthe Isbister has worked with master sculptors, and will teach the tricks of the trade she has acquired through these experiences, as well as her own sculptural building techniques. Throughout the workshop, technical information on sculptural clay bodies, drying and firing techniques, as well as surface treatment will all be discussed and demonstrated. This workshop will provide freedom to be uninhibited by scale, experiencing new techniques and approaches in clay that can open doors for endless creative possibilities.

Stencil Printmaking
This workshop is offered in conjunction with the exhibition; Andrew Qappik: Pangnirtung Memories. Andrew Qappik witll demonstrate stencil printmaking techniques he employs in his work. A series of mylar plastic overlays are used to mask areas of the paper, allowing different colours to be applied. Coloured inks are delicately tamped onto the paper with the tip of a wide brush, creating translucent layers of colour. The technique allows subtle tonal transitions from light to dark, giving the impression of three dimensions to the forms. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to try their hands at the technique, creating their own stencils and images. Supplies are included in the cost.

New Directions in Contemporary Watercolours
Prerequisite: Watercolour 1 or equivalent experience
This is a 3 day workshop in which, to paraphrase Marshall McLuhan, “the medium is the message”. Under the guidance of Jill Brooks, you will explore imaginative, expressive and unorthodox ways of painting with watercolours. You will create a variety of watercolour monoprints and combine mixed media (watercolour pencils, oil pastels, text and collage items) to make inventive and personal works of art.

In conjunction with the exhibition, The Nude in Modern Canadian Art, Derek Brueckner will conduct a mixed media workshop that examines the role of the human bveing in art. The various roles the human figure plays in art, how a human presence can be suggested, and the social and psychological ramifications involving the figure are explored during a tour of the exhibition and throughout the weekend. Diana Thorneycroft will conduct a workshop in conjunction with her exhibition, Diana Thorneycroft: Canada, Myth and History. Working from a selection of reproductions of historic artworks of your choice, you will explore how meaning can be constructed, re-directed and subverted by adding, subtracting and altering the components of an image. Using drawing and collage materials and techniques you will create images that parody or reflect personal or political ideas. A supply list will be mailed.
