Encaustic Painting Workshop
Prerequisite: Painting experience
Encaustic, a hot wax painting process, is an ancient painting medium. The medium was originally made with beeswax, natural resins and pigments and heated on coal burning stoves. The Fayum Portraits, painted in encaustic on wood circa 300 AD, are amongst the best preserved paintings of Antiquity. Contemporary encaustic methods and materials vary widely. Each encaustic painter experiments and discovers her own formulas and working methods.Workshop participants will work independently with the assistance of instructor Tim Schouten. Experimentation, fun and unorthodoxy will be encouraged within the bounds of safe practice. Various applications of the medium on different grounds, including paper, wood and stretched canvas will be demonstrated. Specific areas of participant interest in the medium will be covered on request and different wax formulations will be introduced. Handouts will be provided.“My own working method basically involves melting varied blends of refined beeswax and microcrystalline wax (a petroleum product) with dammar resin crystals in a large double boiler, pouring smaller amounts into pans and mixing with dry pigments or oil paint. I paint with brushes and other tools and I layer each work extensively, working back into the paintings with a heat gun, irons and other heating implements, as well as carving into the wax with knives and other tools.”
A supply list will be mailed. Registration deadline: May 24
