WAG Studio is one of Canada's oldest gallery-run art-making programs. Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that art education is a vital component in the personal development of individuals at any age. Our programs are taught by practicing artists who share their enthusiasm, insight, and highly developed skills. Check out current classes and register here.
We are committed to providing excellence in art instruction by offering:
- A variety of classes for children, teens, and adults
- Tours and discussions of current WAG exhibitions
- Experienced artist instructors
- Five well-lit studio spaces and a designated clay studio
- Spring, summer, fall, and winter class sessions
- Weekend workshops for adults, often reflecting current WAG exhibitions
History: Saturday Morning Art Classes began in 1937 and are still conducted each fall and winter in our studios, sponsored by Winnipeg School Division. In 1972 and 1973, summer programs were organized for the general public. By 1995, WAG Studio had grown so much that we moved out of the WAG lower level and into our new home in two adjacent buildings, allowing us to expand our offerings and develop one of Canada’s largest and most vibrant studio art programs.
Future: As the WAG works to develop the new Inuit Art Centre, the current WAG Studio facility will be replaced by a new state-of-the-art building to house art classes, as well as the Gallery's celebrated collection of contemporary Inuit art and related programs. Education programs offered by the WAG will expand with larger and more versatile spaces. The Inuit Art Centre will allow visitors to create and learn about art in an entirely new way, as we quadruple the number of spaces for students through the use of art studios, interactive galleries, maker-spaces, and global classrooms.
We expect to begin construction in 2017, and studio classes will change during this transition period, but we’re working to find creative solutions to keep students engaged. Some studio classes will move back to the Gallery’s lower level and others will take place in the galleries, while we continue to explore options to take programs out to the community.
