School Programs

Many adults remember their first, early visits to the Winnipeg Art Gallery. They came with their parents for a family program, or with their teachers, visiting the exhibitions as part of a studio or school program. If they returned, sometimes many years later, it was often because they had good memories of those early visits. The aim of School Programs is to create the memories that will lead to a lifelong enjoyment of the richness of the visual expressions of the past and present.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery extends its appreciation to the Department of Canadian Heritage, Museums Assistance Program; the Canada Council for the Arts; the Manitoba Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism; the City of Winnipeg; and the Manitoba Arts Council for their financial support. School Programs is made possible in part by a donation from RBC Foundation.

Another Time, Another Place
Have you ever wondered how your life might be different if you'd lived in another time or place? Think of art as a window into other worlds. This program is intended for exhibitions with historical works and is recommended for Grades 3 and 4.

Colourful
Now that you know the basics, it's time to learn about secondary and tertiary colours, tints and shades, warm and cool colours, and how artists use the language of colour.

Looking for Lines and Shopping for Shapes
How many lines and shapes can you make with your body? Can a line make you sleepy? Can nothing have a shape? Maybe there's more to learn!

Inuit Artists
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live in an Inuit community? Have a whole new experience through the prints, drawings, and sculptures of the many Inuit artists in our collection and traveling exhibitions.

Sense-sation
How many smells, tastes, sounds, and textures are stored in your memory? Visual art relies on your sense memories for meaning – so be sure to bring them along!

Tell Me a Picture
Artists and authors often have similar things to say—but they use different languages. Can you understand what they are saying?

NEW! The Four Seasons
Your backyard isn't the only place to see what the different seasons bring. The Gallery has a vast array of landscapes, colour, and Inuit winter culture to explore.

Art House
Let "WAG," our Gallery dog, show you around the big building where art lives. The high ceilings will make your imaginations soar and with the fossils on the stairs, well there's so much to see…

Making Sense
And you thought you only had to use your eyes! Discover how artists invite you to use all your senses to explore works of art.

Rainbows
Do you know where colour comes from? What would the world be like without it? Find out in this introduction to the exciting world of colour.

Stories and Pictures
Artists and authors tell tales in different ways. Join us as we read stories and learn to read works of art.

But is it Art?
You wouldn't eat the same food everyday, or wear the same outfit (or would you?)—so why not expand your art menu and wardrobe with some different "tastes"? This program is an introduction to understanding different art styles.

Drawn Out
Sometimes artists get their ideas from other artists. You'll have a chance to sketch from works of art—and finish them in your own way. If you have an art journal, this would be a good chance to use it.

Inuit Artists
Did you know that the WAG has the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world? Art from other cultures can teach us a great deal about who we are and how we think. Don't miss the opportunity to study the works of Inuit artists from our travelling and permanent collection exhibitions.

Material Matters
How is a drawing different from a sculpture? Does a print give us a different interpretation of the subject than a painting? We'll look at how each artistic medium has a different voice.

Reflections
Have you ever considered how art reflects the world around us—not just the physical world but the world of ideas, feelings, and beliefs? Take this thought-provoking tour of works in several exhibitions. This program is intended for the study of exhibitions with historical works.

Start With Art
An art exhibition can be the starting point for the creation of a play, story, or poem. Take a tour of an exhibit and brainstorm ideas to take back to the classroom. Oh, and bring along your Language Arts teacher!

NEW! On Sustainability
How is a drawing different from a sculpture? Do some artists hae environmental concerns and how does that look? How do landscapes painted in another century differ from the world we live in now?

MIDDLE YEARS (Gr. 5-8) Thematic: 1 ½ hours

Fine Points
Sketching can be a good way to understand a subject. This program will encourage students to use works of art as starting points for their own creations. Art journals are welcome.

Inuit Artists
Inuit art isn't all soapstone sculpture! Inuit artists use a wide range of subjects, styles, and materials, and their work may be commercial, traditional, or contemporary. The extensive WAG collection and travelling exhibitions provide continuing opportunities to explore the visual language of many northern artists.

Medium Messages
An artist's message may take on different meanings in a drawing, print, painting, or sculpture. Travel through the exhibits and discover that the medium does make a difference.

New Languages
Sometimes we have difficulty talking about contemporary art simply because it defies established definitions and our ways of thinking. This program will challenge your ideas of what art is all about. Intended for exhibitions of contemporary art.

Not in a Vacuum
Art is affected by politics, social change, the media—everything that surrounds the artist. In this program you'll have the opportunity to examine the mutual influences of art and society. History, Science and Language Arts teachers might find this a refreshing approach!
