Prerequisite: Painting 1 or equivalent experience
In conjuction with the exhibition American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell. Over 6 classes, you will examine and parallel the creative process by which Norman Rockwell produced some of his most popular images. Under the guidance of a Derek Brueckner, you will tour the exhibition to discuss and draw inspiration from the work on display. You will choose an image to work from, discuss the techniques and narrative elements the artist employed and then create a painting inspired by the image they selected but based on your own creative ideas and narrative. You will work through several stages of development from viewing Rockwell’s work, to producing a series of preparatory sketches, to arranging and photographing a model, or models with props, as subjects within the narrative. We will partner with PrairieView School of Photography to assist with the photographic aspects of this project. You will also attend An Intimate Perspective on Norman Rockwell with Peter Rockwell, a lecture at the WAG given by the artist’s son, Peter Rockwell, to deepen your understanding of Rockwell’s process and the richness of his imagery. Limited enrolment.
