Live on the Rooftop • Jodie Borle Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald
Thursday August 23, 2012 at 7:30pm
SOLD OUT!
Jodie Borle has been honing her jazz skills since the age of 14, studying the masters like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Dinah Washington and developing her own unique style. A graduate of the U of M’s School of Music, she has been featured on many recordings and has released two discs of her own—and then I did and Snow. Her impressive debut, and then I did, showcased the singer’s sultry, powerful pipes and innovative arrangements, putting an infectious and deeply emotionally connected twist on the jazz-pop genre. The album was released to critical and popular acclaim, and prompted Jodie to release her sophomore album Snow – a collection of 11 holiday songs, a year later. Since then, her songs have cropped up on a number of compilation discs and Canadian TV shows such as Less Than Kind and CBC’s The Border.
Heard daily on jazz radio, Borle continues to receive praise from the media and her peers, Impressing audiences with her relaxed stage presence, soaring vocals, and infectious humour. She has been compared to Ella on countless occasions, and has been dubbed the “Jann Arden” of the jazz world, due to her on stage “story telling” in between songs.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Jodie also performs with a number of different groups of varying musical styles, including choral group the Winnipeg Singers, a capella group The Snowtones, and established Ska band – The Scarlet Union.
Whether you hear her traditional and improvisational interpretations of the Great American Song Book or hear the sophisticated, relaxing renditions of popular songs on her album and then I did, Jodie proves she is equally well versed in many musical styles. Tonight, Jodie pays tribute to her favourite singer, and her idol – Ella Fitzgerald.
Tonight's menu served from 6-7pm: Pork ribs, corn on the cob, chorizo studded potato salad, watermelon ($25)
