Picasso’s Man and Beast. The Vollard Suite of Prints.

Get ready for Manitoba’s first major showcase of work by Pablo Picasso in over 40 years. This summer, the WAG presents Picasso: Man and Beast and Picasso in Canada, two exhibitions highlighting the many sides of Picasso, who remains one of the greatest artists of all time.

Through his work, Picasso was instrumental in shaping the art of the 20th century. Although perhaps best known for his Cubist paintings, Picasso was also a skilled printmaker, exploring myriad ideas and influences in virtually every known technique from intaglio to lithography. The 100 etchings and drypoints in The Vollard Suite are collectively considered one of his printmaking masterworks, and constitute one of the treasures of the national collection. Acquired in 1957, the entire Suite is rarely displayed due to its fragility, and only a handful of the original complete sets remain in the world. Exploring the tension between man and beast that often characterized Picasso and his work, The Vollard Suite represents both the civilizing nature of art and provocative yet quintessential representation of Picasso’s “beast within.” The exhibition is brought to Winnipeg through the NGC@WAG partnership with the National Gallery of Canada.
