This tour will take place this summer, with WAG Curator of Inuit Art, Dr. Darlene Coward Wight, and the Great Canadian Travel Group. This small group – up to 12 people maximum – will experience two of the main centres for Inuit art, Cape Dorset (Kinngait) and Pangnirtung.
You’ll have the opportunity to visit several artists represented in the WAG collection, and hear first-hand about the inspiration behind their work.
The journey starts in Ottawa and stops at the capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit. You’ll enjoy a boating excursion from Pangnirtung to Auyuittuq National Park and take in the zig-zag skyline of craggy granite peaks and glittering glaciers, where winding waterways teem with narwhal and ringed seals. Once back in the community, you’ll visit renowned Inuit artist Andrew Qappik and the Uqqurmiut Tapestry Studio and Print Shop.
You will then travel to Cape Dorset (Kinngait), known as the most artistic community in Canada, where you’ll visit ancient archeological sites at nearby Mallikjuaq Territorial Park, including a tundra walk. The group will also spend time with a few local artists and see a printing demonstration at the Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop.
Throughout the trip, you’ll be treated with delicious meals, live entertainment, and hikes with local guides! And, the Great Canadian Travel Group is making a $200 donation to the WAG Inuit Art Centre for every booking.
